If your family is anything like ours, you’ve probably stayed at a luxury hotel that bragged about being kid-friendly, only to find that your children were tolerated, rather than welcomed.

Well, put those negative experiences behind you, because Wequassett more than lives up to its reputation as one of the country’s most family-friendly luxury resorts.

Not only did staff members greet our daughters with big smiles wherever we went, they went out of their way to delight our girls with little surprises like milk and cookies, story books, balloons, handwritten cards, and even a gift bag of kites for them to fly on the beach.

Here are five reasons why Wequassett is such a phenomenal place to stay when you’re traveling to Cape Cod with kids.

1. Free Ice Cream Every Day

Every afternoon, this adorable vintage Good Humor ice cream truck makes its rounds through the resort, offering free ice cream and popsicles to guests. It’s so much fun to see the kids scream and run whenever they hear the ringing bell.

2. A Truly Innovative Kids Club

This isn’t your generic face painting and board games type of kids club. The Children’s Center at Wequassett offers incredibly creative and well-thought-out programs. Daytime programs run from 10:30 in the morning to 2:30 in the afternoon, and include themes like Chef for a Day, where the resort’s master pastry chef teaches kids how to make cookies, and the kids work a lemonade stand to raise money for children’s cancer.

“We’re looking for a pirate cause he took our treasure!”

Or Treasure Island, where kids board one of the resort’s boats to look for clues to find pirate treasure, culminating in a surprise meeting with the pirate himself!

“Where’s the treasure?”

“I’m not telling!”

The center also has evening programs from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, with themes like pajama parties, movie nights, and carnivals.

3. Room Setups That Work for Families

When you’re traveling with your family, you don’t want to have to squeeze everyone into a single room. Wequassett understands this, and offers a variety of configurations for families, from adjoining suites to cottages with multiple bedrooms. We stayed at the Tulip Cottage, a free-standing house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room with a pull-out couch. Our girls loved the patio and big back yard. Another great choice, especially if you’re traveling with grandparents, is the Mother Goose Cottage, which has three bedrooms and even has a full kitchen.

4. Food Presented With Fun and Flair

You can order from the kids menu at any of the resort’s five restaurants, and it’s presented on this adorable sailboat. The menu includes kids classics like mac and cheese and plain pasta, but, fittingly for Cape Cod, it also has some great seafood options like New England Clam Chowder and grilled salmon. But the showstopper by far is the kids breakfast buffet. Kids are greeted by a pirate and get to climb onto a pirate ship to get their food.

5. Genuine Concern for Kids’ Safety

One thing I really appreciate about Wequassett is that they take safety very seriously, without interfering with the kids’ fun. The captain always straps life vests on the kids when they get on the boat. The kids club has a strict sign in / sign out policy, and they keep the doors and gates locked while the programs are in session. One day, our 3-year-old swam a little too far out in the pool and got a little scare. She was totally fine, and we honestly didn’t give it a second thought. But not only did the resort discipline the lifeguard on duty, two different members of the management team came to apologize to us for the incident. As a parent, it was reassuring to see how genuine their concern is for children’s safety.
