I love that you are teaching him this. I feel that a lot of parents are afraid to let their kids do real-world activities but they have to learn sometime! And you're right, it's good for them to practice being careful. Everyone gives me a hard time for letting my 3 yo use a real knife to help cut up the veggies for dinner but I figure I'd rather him learn to use it properly than to not learn- and obviously there is close supervision. 🙂
