(My 19 yo son who has had a few special people allow him some unique opportunities (he was into titanium frames and fixed gear (no gear) bikes and a bicycle shop owner "hired" him (traded labor for bike parts) at 14 years old to do a variety of things at various skill levels; no doubt boosted his self confidence at a young age – just like your group did for Sam.)
